ILA strike would impact Houston port and economy, businesses say

December 20, 2012Container shipments moving through the Port of Houston are in danger of slowing to a standstill if the International Longshoremen’s Association moves forward with a strike expected to start Dec. 30.
On Dec. 18, the U.S. Maritime Alliance Ltd. (known as USMX), which represents container carriers and maritime terminals on the U.S. East and Gulf coasts, revealed that negotiations with the ILA over a new contract had fallen through. On Dec. 19, the ILA informed local unions that they should prepare to strike on Dec. 30, when their contract ends.
