Memphis’ vaunted versatility as a transportation hub could come into play if dock workers strike East Coast and Gulf Coast ports this fall.
A threatened work stoppage could take a significant bite out of goods flowing between Memphis and its go-to ports of New Orleans, Charleston and Savannah, industry officials say.
But the city could gain traffic in containerized cargo if retailers reroute cargo ships to West Coast ports in anticipation of a strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association.
